The outside drainage gully carrying waste water was blocked. The drain was unblocked and flushed through.
The designated operative arrived on time accompanied by his father and his son which is always a good sign! The grandfather also spotted my beast of a motorcycle in the garage which is an even better sign. Cracking job all round. They didn't even snigger when the cause of the blockage was discovered i.E. A ruddy house brick that I had obviously knocked down the gully in error!
