My Shower Drain Smells: What do I do?

Often our shower drain can start to release a foul odour that makes showering a nightmare. There are multiple things that can lead to foul smells appearing from our showers drain, such as hair, body oil and even soap- all of which are difficult to avoid. We’ve put together our top tips on how you can get your shower sparkling and smelling clean again.

Remove Debris

By unscrewing the drain and attempting to remove all debris, you are likely to be removing the source of the odour, which can help to fix the initial problem. This can also help to ensure your drain doesn’t get blocked in the near future. Some drains have a stopper connected that can be removed without tools, and you will then need to scoop out anything hidden inside. Dispose of it in a plastic bag and pop in your bin. If there looks to be any hard to reach debris, you can try using a metal coat hanger to reach down the pipes.

Boiling Water

Using boiling water is an age old trick that seems to help with drains every time. If your shower drain has a dry cloth, remove this and carefully pour just boiled water down the drain. The drain should run clear, and you can repeat this process as many times as needed if the foul smell persists or if you continue to find debris within your drain.

Baking Soda & Vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar work together to create a chemical reaction that is great at cleaning our drainage systems. If you’re experiencing foul smells coming from your drain, you can use as much as one cup of baking soda down your drain. Once complete, you can pour vinegar down the drain. We’d advise using half a cup of vinegar to one cup of baking soda. The chemical reaction will occur, and you should leave it to do this for as long as possible, though around 30 minutes is fine. Let your shower run afterwards to wash away the leftover baking soda and vinegar.
