Your drains are designed to do one thing. Drain waste water of all kinds away from the home and into the sewer system. Bad smells should not come back the other way. So if your nose does detect something a bit whiffy, it’s a sign that there’s a problem. This could be a blockage, or a breakage. If it’s a blockage it’s probably been caused by something going down your toilet, sink or drain that they weren’t designed to cope with. Disposable nappies, wet wipes or cotton make up pads down the toilet, even children’s toys. The shower or bath may have got clogged with hair or soap scum. And food waste may have gone down your kitchen sink – any fats or grease that would have looked runny and liquid when warm will solidify when cold and form a blockage or fatberg. You might also get vermin or other small animals inside your drains, especially if they have no adequate drain covers. If they get trapped and die, then you’ll soon notice the smell! What happens with any blockage of this type is that organic waste will decompose, and bacteria start to feed on the waste. The more there is to feed on, the more the bacteria multiply. A bad smell is very unpleasant and needs to be investigated quickly.
If the normal tricks of trying a plunger, very hot water, or a chemical cleaner have not worked, then give us a call at Happy Drains and we can come and investigate. The same applies if you suspect the smell may be caused by a break somewhere in the drain system. A cracked and leaking sewer pipe underground is not going to be good for the environment or your health, so get in touch with us asap on 0800 849 8099.
