This summer has been so disappointing that no-one really wants to think about Autumn. But it’ll be here soon, and now is the time to get prepared.
The first job to do is a visual check on your gutters, downpipes and drains. If you’re able to safely clear out your gutters of leaves and twigs, it’ll help prevent any blockages when a few more autumn leaves inevitably get blown in. If you’ve had a pile of leaves in your gutters since last autumn, there’s a good chance they’ve now decomposed into a solid gunky mass, which definitely needs removing! Inspect the condition of the pipes and gutters and get any repairs done, like loose brackets or leaks. Clear any drains of leaves and other accumulated debris, and think about getting proper drain covers to prevent autumn leaves from washing into your drains. Now could also be a good time to prune back any trees or hedges that are growing close to your property, before they start dropping their leaves. Once the leaves do start falling, get them raked up as soon as you can and onto your compost pile.
You should also check over any pipes and outdoor taps. Make sure they are insulated ready for the colder months, and are not dripping. When it’s really cold, hosereels and hosepipes can be removed and stored in your garage or garden shed.
And of course have a look to see if any drains appear to be blocked. In the drier summer weather this might not cause an issue, but come the colder, wetter months, you could be facing flooding, damp, mould and all kinds of other issues. If there’s a problem with any aspect of your drains or pipes, then prevention is better than cure. Now’s the time to give us a call at Happy Drains on 0800 849 8099.
