Shared Drains. Whose Responsibility is it?

No one likes to come across a drainage issue, especially at this time of the year. One question we get asked a lot is, “who’s responsibility is shared drainage issues?” Well, we’ve got the answer for you that will help get you on the right path to having your drainage systems back up and running again.

Your Property

Are you the owner of your home or business; then it’s likely you are responsible for the drainage system within the boundaries of your property. Any issues or general maintenance is your responsibility. If, however, you have noticed a drainage issue outside your property then this is likely to be down to the lateral drains which serve to the sewer system. Most sewers now are publicly owned and ran by local water companies. We would recommend contacting them immediately if that is the case.

Shared Buildings

Do you live in a shared apartment, or flats, and have a drainage issue, then please don’t hesitate to contact your landlord first, as they will be able to get in touch with us. If it’s a lateral or sewer issue, then it would be your local water company that will need contacting, for example Thames Water.

If you’ve spotted an issue within your drains this Autumn and are unable to resolve it yourself with home remedies, then our expert engineers are available to visit your property.
