Halloween means sweets, costumes, pumpkins and knocking on doors asking complete strangers to give you chocolate.
Perfectly normal behaviour.
But this Halloween, Happy Drains has a challenge for the younger members of the household.
Can you tell which things are a TREAT for your drains… and which are a nasty TRICK?
No peeking at the answers.
Question 1
You’ve finished carving your pumpkin and you’re left with a bowl full of seeds and stringy pumpkin guts.
Can they go down the kitchen sink?
TRICK!
Pumpkin pulp and seeds belong in the food waste or compost not down the drain. Once inside your pipes, they can help create a rather unpleasant Halloween blockage.
Question 2
You’ve used some ordinary toilet paper.
Can you flush it?
TREAT!
That’s exactly what your toilet is designed for.
As a simple rule, stick to the 3 Ps: pee, poo and paper.
Not glamorous.
But easy to remember.
Question 3
A cleaning wipe says “flushable” on the packet.
Down the toilet?
TRICK!
Wet wipes don’t break apart like toilet paper and can contribute to nasty blockages.
Bin them instead.
Your toilet will be much happier.
Question 4
You’ve been trick-or-treating and somehow ended up with a sweet you don’t like.
Can you chuck it down the toilet and flush it away?
TRICK!
Toilets aren’t bins, even at Halloween.
Sweets, wrappers and lollipop sticks can all cause trouble if they end up in your drains.
And besides, throwing away Halloween sweets?
There must be somebody in the house willing to make that sacrifice.
Question 5
Someone has cooked a Halloween fry-up and there’s greasy oil left in the pan.
Pour it down the sink?
BIG TRICK!
Fat, oil and grease can cool and harden inside drains, sticking to other rubbish and helping to create blockages. (Fatbergs!)
Let it cool and dispose of it properly instead.
FINAL QUESTION
Sweet wrappers?
Cotton buds?
Kitchen roll?
Wet wipes?
Pumpkin seeds?
A plastic vampire fang?
None of them belong down the toilet or drain.
